Role Summary
The Sr. Applications Engineer is the technical customer-facing engineer who translates customer requirements into practical automation solutions. You will lead solution definition, create system specifications, develop software and HMI applications, support commissioning, and guide customers through validation and O&M. This role requires strong controls/software skills, hands-on commissioning experience, and excellent communication.
Key Responsibilities
Work with sales, project managers, and customers to gather and analyze requirements and produce application proposals and technical scopes.
Design automation architectures (PLCs, HMIs, motion controllers, robotics, IO, networks) that meet functional, safety, and performance requirements.
Develop and document PLC logic, HMI screens, motion profiles, and integration code using preferred platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff, Fanuc, ABB, etc.).
Create system functional specifications, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, sequence descriptions, and test plans.
Lead FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and support SATs/commissioning at customer sites; troubleshoot and tune systems.
Support system validation, start-up, and operator training; produce user manuals and maintenance documentation.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and safety teams to ensure successful integration and compliance with applicable standards (e.g., CE, UL, ISO).
Provide post-installation support, remote diagnostics, and continuous improvement recommendations.
Estimate engineering effort and support proposal pricing for technically complex projects.
Maintain version control and documentation in PLM/EDMS and adhere to company QA processes.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls, or related discipline; equivalent experience considered.
3+ years of experience in industrial automation, system integration, or applications engineering.
Proven hands-on experience programming PLCs and HMIs (examples: Rockwell/Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, TwinCAT, Ignition).
Experience with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC-UA).
Practical experience with robotics integration and motion control preferred.
Strong troubleshooting and commissioning experience in field/start-up environments.
Proficient technical writing skills for specifications, test plans, and manuals.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; customer-facing experience.
Willingness to travel to customer sites (typically X–Y% as required).
Preferred
Experience with SCADA systems, vision systems, or MES integration.
Familiarity with safety standards and safety PLCs (SIL, PLe, safety relays).
Certifications in PLC platforms, robotics, or project management.
Experience with design tools (AutoCAD, EPLAN) and version control systems (Git).
Location: Cambridge, ON Salary Range: $45hr - $55hr + OT
